A Shilling for Candles is the second Inspector Grant novel by Josephine Tey, first published in 1936. When the body of celebrated actress Christine Clay is discovered on a Kent beach, Scotland Yard's Inspector Grant must untangle a web of jealousy, ambition, and secret identities among those who knew her. The investigation takes Grant from theatrical London to the English countryside, testing both his detective skills and his faith in conventional police methods. Tey brings her characteristic psychological insight to a mystery that is as much about understanding character as solving a crime.
